HARRISBURG -- Their marriage survived years of speculation about Ed Rendell's never-confirmed affairs, but Monday -- 20 days after the former governor left office -- he and U.S. Circuit Judge Marjorie O. Rendell told friends they were separating. The news came in a five-sentence e-mail sent at 4:08 p.m. and signed "Ed and Midge."
The Rendells told recipients that the split was amicable, that they will remain friends and that they "will not find it awkward or uncomfortable" to be invited to the same social events. "This has been a difficult decision, but we both believe it is the right thing to do," the message said. The Rendells did not say which of them will move out of the Philadelphia family home.
In June, Mr. Rendell angrily denied rumors of an extramarital affair after Philadelphia magazine published an article about gossip involving him and a woman who worked for a state agency that provides multimedia services for training, tourism and other purposes.
