The tape tells the tale. This is video of a Marcellus Shale gas compressor station in Greene County. Not much to see.

But watch what happens when the camera switches over to infrared video. Now, suddenly, there is a lot to see: Plumes of unfiltered pollution wafting out of a tank and into the air.

Team 4 is the first to obtain this tape, shot last summer by regulators at the state Department of Environmental protection. The DEP says it doesn't know exactly what is being emitted in this video, but it does know it isn't just steam.

Nick Lazor, DEP: "That is some sort of hydrocarbon. Again, that is not quantitative, nor does it speciate. It just tells you, you have some sort of hydrocarbon."

In other words, pollution."

3. DEP Study - Move Along Citizens, Nothing to See Here?

There was a short news article a couple days ago in which DEP monitored some gas wells and said there was no reason to worry about air pollutants.

I haven't read the study, and don't know any more. I'd like to know much much more.

4. My parents' neighbors drilled a well the minimum distance

from parents' house. I have smelled the fumes at times when I am approaching their house by car with the windows rolled up.

These wells are being drilled adjacent to housing plans and even on school properties around here. I guess when you have a governor and a president pro tempore of the state senate who are nothing more than errand boys for the drillers, this is what you get.

5. It's such a shame that we spent so much money and so many years

cleaning up the air and the waterways of PA only to have the Marcellus Shale grifters ruin them again.

6. Air quality in O'Hara Township was NASTY this morning.

Around 7 a.m., I opened the door to the enclosed terrace where my cat likes to hang out after breakfast. The air was indescribably foul - like chemicals/metals. Haven't smelled air like that in Pittsburgh since back in the 60's. My cat took one whiff and ran back into the house. The other thing it reminded me of was the smell around Ground Zero - which was still evident in the air when I visited lower Manhattan 3 months after 9/ll.

Can't blame today's air on Marcellus Shale yet - most likely it came from Duquesne Light's facility in nearby Springdale. It had installed a $250 million dollar gas desulferization system, or scrubber, which rusted out within years, and last I heard Duq. Light had gotten a waiver to operate it without the scrubber for months until they could repair/replace it.

My local plumber, a pretty conservative guy, is of the opinion that the chemicals used in fracking will cause a lot of cancers and other health problems, but it will take several years for those problems to evidence themselves.
