The Pittsburgh Public Schools board voted Wednesday night to cut 59 district employees, including 31 teachers, through a mix of furloughs and layoffs and could vote next month to pare approximately 40 additional staff.
The job cuts, aimed at confronting a gaping budget shortfall and ongoing enrollment declines, were approved by an 8-0 vote. Board member Mark Brentley Sr. did not attend.
The areas affected by the job losses include career and technical education, art and French, as well as early childhood education, district officials said.
