Willie Stargell to be honored with postage stamp

The U.S. Postal Service will honor the late Pirates slugger Willie Stargell with a postage stamp next year.

The All-Star left fielder and first baseman will be immortalized on a forever stamp as part of the postal service's Major League set.

Also to be honored are Joe DiMaggio, Larry Doby and a player to be named later.

The stamps will be issued in July.

Beautiful! Pops and Clemente were my favorite Bucs! I still remember "Chicken on the Hill" and Stargell stars on the hats of 79 Bucs who came back & beat the Orioles in the World Series.

2. Wilver was not only a great baseball player...
but also a great man.

I had the honor of meeting him ca. 1993 when he came to Harrisburg to talk about sickle-cell anemia to the Junior League. He stayed long after the event and listened to many personal stories about the fight against that horrible disease.

On a lighter note, he let my brother & me try on his 1971 WS ring - I remember that I could fit a couple of fingers in it and remarked that I had always wondered how big a man would have to be to hit a ball completely out of Dodger Stadium.

This is a truly deserved honor & I can't wait to get some stamps; thanks for posting!
