However, NO charges were filed against Sandusky until November 2011, even though there was a credible witness who contacted police in 2008. Few people in Second Mile and in State College were alerted that Sandusky was a threat to kids, allegedly. An editorial in the Erie newspaper asks why.
"Nearly three years. That's how long it took the state of Pennsylvania to conduct its own investigation that led to Sandusky's arrest.
How many years of childhood innocence have been ripped from the eight youngsters listed in the grand jury report?
The Harrisburg Patriot-News, which reported in March that a grand jury was looking into Sandusky's relationships with youngsters involved with his Second Mile charity, has raised questions about how long it took the state Attorney General's Office to investigate Sandusky and whether the investigation was understaffed. The investigation began when Gov. Tom Corbett was attorney general.
Corbett, who targeted child predators as attorney general, should answer fully whether the investigation moved as quickly as possible under his leadership. In response to the Sandusky allegations, the Pennsylvania House and Senate are considering legislation to require that anyone who knows about the sexual assault of a child must report it to police. Pennsylvania's requirement for reporting such crimes is less stringent than other states, and Pennsylvania's rate of investigations into reports of child abuse is the lowest in the nation, according to the statewide Protect Our Children Committee."
