Quinnipiac poll: Rendell Tops Possible Challengers In Pennsylvania
Search Detail

February 17, 2005 - Rendell Tops Possible Challengers In Pennsylvania, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Voters Back His $800 Billion Environmental Plan

Pennsylvania voters give incumbent Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell mixed grades, including a 51 - 33 percent approval rating, but he has solid early leads over possible Republican challengers, including Bill Scranton and Lynn Swann, according to a Quinnipiac poll released today.

Gov. Rendell had a 52 - 30 percent approval rating in a September 16, 2004, poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN uh-pe-ack) University.

Match-ups between Rendell and possible Republican challengers show:
Rendell over State Sen. Jeff Piccola 52 - 28 percent;
The Governor tops former Lt. Gov. William Scranton III 50 - 35 percent; Rendell over former Pittsburgh Steeler Lynn Swann 50 - 34 percent.

2. Good news.
This is very good news. Like bleedingheart said, the more time Rendell has to stump for whoever opposses Santorum, the better their chances are. Hopefully these poll numbers will scare off someone like Swann, who's name recognition probably produces the biggest threat to Fast Ed. Nobody is really sure who Piccola is and while Scranton may be a viable candidate, he won't be able to muster up enough support to overcome the swamp of Philly voters who are diehard for Rendell.

3. I agree...
We really need to concentrate all of our efforts on ridding ourselves of Santorum! The diagnosis of Spectre's Hogkins disease is scary as well.....Going to get very interesting in Pennsylvania in the coming months!

5. Could you imagine if Specter had to step down
I mean he is 75 years old and even though Hodgkin's isn't one of those really bad cancers, at that age it has to be tough

6. Specter won't retire as long as he is physically able to serve
He enjoys being a Senator way too much.

4. Looks great but I still get nervous about Lynn Swann
Rendell won because of the overwhelming support he received from the Philadelphia Region. I could see someone like Lynn Swann pull a greater turnout from the Pittsburgh area including folks who don't regularly vote but like the concept of voting for a Hall-of-Fame Pittsburgh Steeler. (Kinda like the Arnold factor in California). Scranton doesn't have much name recognition left and who the hell is Piccola? However, I would prefer one of those 2 guys on the ticket instead of Swann.

Then again Hall-of-famer Steve Largent lost the governor race in Oklahoma - go figure
