It is a disappointment that the Providence Journal newspaper made the decision to endorse George W. Bush for President of The United States.
Reading the weak editorial offered by ProJo, one can only be left with the impression that the editors of the paper have been living in the same bubble of disillusionment occupied by Bush and Cheney.
If it can be called a reason; the editors settled on Terrorism as something everyone could get behind. Much like WMD was settled on by the Bush Administration as something everyone could agree on to sell the war against Iraq to the Congress and the American people.
All things being equal, conservatives aren’t generally stupid, but I wonder what deal with the devil Sutton, Rawson, and Whitcomb made before they decided recommending George W. Bush for a second term was a good idea.
Aside from the fact that Belo Corporation has essentially raped the paper, and reduced it into a third rate reprint service for better reporters and writers; the fundamental question must be asked -- What role did the corporate masters from Texas have in determining the direction the editorial page?
Hold that thought for a moment and examine one key paragraph in the less than lackluster offering by the editorial page.
With his record of courage and resolution, we believe that President George W. Bush, in a second term, would not only build on the coalition he has already assembled against terrorism but also help establish Mideast peace and broaden democracy in that tortured region. In so doing, he would help ensure the long-term security of the United States.
It is insulting to anyone with a brain to suggest that George W. Bush has any record of courage and resolution.
Take into account that John Kerry has more years of service to his country than George W. Bush has been allegedly sober, and examine a long line of election year controversy over the Bush military record, I’m at a loss to understand how standing on a pile of rubble, shaking an impetuous fist at the sky, and swearing to hunt down those responsible for the attacks, (which as we know, Bush hasn’t), translates to a record of courage and resolution.
It is equally insulting to ignore the fact that George W. Bush has abandoned any type of Middle East Peace Process during his presidency, and then to suggest that in a second term, he would do not only better, but help to establish the process.
Hey guys, we did that already -- under Bill Clinton.
What I find most repugnant about the ProJo endorsement, isn’t that they are supporting Bush; but that it simply ignores the facts of the world as we know them.
Under George W. Bush; Americans have lost more jobs, millions more are living in poverty; millions have lost health insurance; environmental protection has been pushed aside in favor of polluting corporations; Federal Energy Policy was decided in secret -- secrets that required such protection that the administration went all the way to the Supreme Court to keep it quiet; America was rushed into war against a country that had nothing to do with attacking us; Civil Liberties are under assault by the Patriot Act and the Bush Justice Department; the signature “No Child Left Behind Act” got left behind in the budget process; fiscal responsibility got thrown out the window when projected budget surpluses became the largest deficit the country has ever known; the Federal Government has expanded larger than any “Tax and Spend” Democrat could even dream of; the largest entitlement program was passed -- which is only a pot of gold for giant drug companies; did I also mention Prisoner Abuse, GITMO, and the dangerous rise of religious influence on the national stage?
But since the Providence Journal brought up terrorism, Osama bin Laden is still running around free, looking better than ever.
Feel safer guys?
This election isn’t just about fighting those who would do us harm, but even on that score, Bush is a miserable failure.
It’s too bad the Providence Journal’s editorial page is either delusional or bought and paid for by Texas based Belo Corporation, because if you are looking for a record of courage and resolution, look no further than John Kerry.
Either way though, there are two types of people who are planning on voting for George W. Bush on Tuesday; The very rich, or the very stupid.
