I can't believe someone finally replied, but sorry to say that you are indeed located in what was once considered part of Providence Plantations but don't fear. . .we were never slave owners. . .we just exported them. So no big deal. I'm also a resident of Providence Plantations as I live on the mainland. But my sleepy seaside berg was part of Massachusetts until 1840. Funny state eh? We had Buddy and now we have the son of a Mob Lawyer, a gay lawyer, of both Italian and Jewish ancestry, who seems relatively cool. Tres bizarre. Well at least there's two of us.

Love your handle!
Cheers!

I live 6 miles as the crow flies from Newport, but it funnily takes 45 minutes to drive there. I'll truthfully be amazed if we get many more folks to post. But with the politics of this state, we've got a great deal to discuss. Have fun fellow R.I. ers.

8. Land haunted
by old spirits as well.

The ghost of Metacom (King Philip) and the Pokanocket, crossing Montaup (Mt. Hope) Bay in canoe to Sakonnet to wade the flats off the point on a low tide looking for clams.

Beautiful Metacom, seated on the throne carved from living rock of the mountain king(Bristol), looking east at sunrise over Montaup, satchem of the Pokanocket, elite warrior class of the greater Mohegan Nations, and who other clans of the nation sent select young warriors to train in the disciples of spirit and samurai-like physical arts.

Around at night the past never went anywhere, these spirits still waiting at places called Weekapaug, Quonochontaug, Satchuest, Sakonnet.

and if legend is true. . .the Sakonnet tribe was at the time of the colonists, a matriarchy ruled by Awashonks who was presumably a bit of a pacifist. She signed a peace treaty with Benjamin Church at Treaty Rock Farm shortly before King Phillip's War erupted and her tribe sorrowfully succumbed to white man's disease.

By the way, Sakonnet is the native word for "haunt of the Wild Goose" and to this day, they linger lengthily and extensively here in various assorted fields.

As I have said for years. . ."goose parties make me very, very happy."

So glad we're talking local politics!

19. hi

Sorry to drop in on this thread, but I need a bit of advice from natives.

I'm doing the Campaign Underground entry for Rhode Island and so far I've put in four major media outlets- the Journal, Ch 6, Ch 10, and Ch 12. There's a list of some smaller others at http://www.dcpoliticalreport.com/RI - and I'm not sure they're important enough to list. Please tell me if I'm missing some relatively important paper(s), or ones to delete, or whatever else I might have gotten wrong.

I'm not in Rhode Island often anymore but its full of nostalgia for me, which has much to do with people I knew and College Hill- I got into Brown but didn't go despite wanting to, and didn't like the place I did go to then. But the taste has always remained. Oh, not to to slight Bristol/Mount Hope or Aquidneck any, or those scarlet summer sunsets that are so amazing anywhere close to the shoreline. You've got a great little piece of the country there.

20. The Providence Phoenix is the only alternative
newpaper that is distributed state wide. Check out Phillipe and Jorge's column. They're really great social satirists who are aging white hetero hippies who masquerade as hispanic gay guys. They're hysterical.

The other mainstream paper is "The Newport Daily News," but it's not really noteworthy.

If you need any more info, I'd be happy to supply it.

24. I lived in Providence in the 70s
I was pretending to be a Brown student. For a couple years, Brown even went along with the gag.

I still like the vibe of Providence. When I was the bass player for Cul de Sac, we recorded a CD at a studio called Sound Station Seven, off Atwells Ave. I dunno how the rest of the band felt, but to me it was like coming home, I had a wonderful time. (And it only cost me $5000.)

Brown has a strong liberal component, and some rabid repugs. I grew up 2 blocks from Thayer St, and took every advantage of Brown and it's offerings. I even went to Brown summer high school. I still attend the occasional lecture there, like Sy Hersh last fall. What are you going to study?

What I plan to study changes just about every day... if I had an infinite amount of money I swear I would major in half of what they offer, but the most likely majors on my list now are History, Philosophy, Political Science, Economics, and Physics. Hopefully I will be able to pick one or two of these by the time I have to declare a concentration...

And I am definitely excited about the political activity on campus. Providence, and especially Brown, should provide a nice change from Kentucky. I bet the right- wingers they do have there are pretty good at debating though, given what they are up against.

66. I'm not from RI, but...
this is my first time writing on the Rhode Island page-I visited Rhode Island for the first time ever this summer-my "boyfriend" had a business trip to Newport/Middletown July 31-August 2 and after begging enough (he was there two times before but didn't take me despite lots and lots of pleading) I got to go-these were the days when it was really hot out and the buses were not charging fares, remember? Anyway, you have such a beautiful state, and such nice people. I spent the 1st and 2nd on Easton's Beach and on two separate occasions when I left my things on the beach to go for food, etc., people were nice enough to chase the seagulls away from my things. In New Jersey, where I am from (born and raised), on one occasion, seagulls got away with a whole bag of cheese doodles, a whole box of peanut butter cookies, and a package of chips ahoy while people around just watched. And I just cleaned up the mess they made. Now, is is true that Rhode Island is the bluest state in the country? I remember seeing last fall, I think that RI had the lowest Bush approval rating in the country, which is really why I wanted to see what the smallest state was all about. The 01-20-09 Bush's Last Day bumper stickers I have not seen anywhere else except RI. There was a radio station, the 94.1 rock station-I forget the call letters where they actually went through a "cost of the war, casualties, etc." list at night on the air, and talk wasn't their format. I was amazed-you don't hear that in New Jersey at all, and I don't understand why. It seemed that everyone there was very open about their disgust for BushCo, which made me think I was in some sort of dreamworld or parallel universe, seriously. I finished school for medical technology recently and applied for my RI license (RI is one of 12 states that license MT's) I was so impressed with everything and wouldn't mind if I had to work there at all. Anyway, I hope to keep coming back to this board if it is okay...Dawnne

67. Glad you had a good experience here.
The radio station is WHJY and despite the fact that it's a clear channel station, some of the jocks really rip on this "misadministration."

A seagull eating cheese doodles is a pretty funny image.

Of course it's okay if you come back to this board but it's sort of a yawn fest at times.

68. Go Rhody Rams!
22-year-old URI senior! I was born in Newport and lived there for 19 years. Now I live in Middletown when I'm not at school. I'm a social science/education major and I want to teach high school social studies at Rogers in Newport.
