moving from MD to Providence

And i've never set foot in the state, and this will be only my second time in New England (I've been to NH once, years ago) any suggestions/advice/things i should know??

I'm coming up this weekend to do some apartment hunting...

You will love Providence and Rhode Island is a beautiful state.

TF Green Airport,in neighboring Warwick, is one of the Southwest airlines busy spots,so you can fly all over for half nothing.

Great restaurants in Providence also.

2. Rhode Island is smaller than L.A county. . .

but it's an amazingly diverse, yet provincial state. There are folks in Prov who've never been to Newport and folks in Newport who've never been to Providence. Some people used to look at me as though I had three heads when I used to split my work week between the two places and lived in a very rural place that is 30 miles from Prov. and a 45 minute drive to the other.

The energy in different parts of the state is wildly varied. In the Northwestern part of the state it feels like southern New Hampshire with gentle hills and lakes. South County has a really unusual Midwestern vibe in some ways but is very beautiful. Newport is a really uncanny crossection of lost aristocracy, touristas, gold diggers, fishermen, War College folk, and aging hipsters. Where I live is very much like the Cape, coastal but with not so many pine trees.

Providence has experienced a rennaisance in recent years.
You'll be totally entertained. . .college kids, great food, talented artists, and more corrupt politicians than New Jersey.

3. I Love my State...

The biggest difficulty is that you may find housing VERY $$$ if you are a younger person or are looking for someone to share the rent check out the local Whole Foods Bread and Circus. People post all kinds of services and needs including roomates. If you have the money they just finished a new 'upscale' apartment building near Providence Place mall it used to be the old Foundry and retains a sense of history.

The talk radio is way too conservative but FM 89.7 is great it is Boston Station and plays great Jazz every evening after 7. The RI NPR station is 1290.

If you are in Providence on the 3rd Thursday of the month take the Art Trolly and check out Gallery Night.

We grow our democrats conservative and our republicans liberal.

Lots of different churches the oldest synagog in the US is in Newport.

The zoo is small and great.

5. RI is cool but...

Be paitient. I am a RI native who moved to Seattle to be closer to the outdoors.

Give the people time. They are really friendly (a little pushy) but it's cool - they like people from out of the state .

Maybe you can make a positive change in RI to care more about the environment (if you are into that). Last visit - I was tired of seeing Dunkin Donuts cups all over the highway.

~ Thayer St and the Prov waterfront (especially during waterfire)
~ Trinity Theatre for Christmas Carol
~ Newport - and tour the Breakers
~ Mystic CT
~ Misquamicuit beach in Westerly
~ Watch Hill in Westerly

I'm a PA transplant now in CT but i travel RI for work often. It's a great state. Has a lot to offer for such a small area. Providence is a great city. Hope you like it there.

9. Welcome to RI!

There are some great restaurants here in Rhode Island. I've never been to it, but I've heard that Pat Orlando's Italian Reastaurnat in Johnston is excellent. There's also Ri-Ra down in Providence which I've also heard from my cousin is an excellent Irish-style pub/restaurant. Romano's Macaroni Grill near Warwick Mall is also a great Italian restaurant.

Oh, yeah, did I mention that in RI you can flip off bad drivers? :D

10. I've been to Ri/Ra

I live in north attleboro, ma, so I tend to hit Prov more than Boston. Ri/Ra is a GREAT Irish pub, it's right near Providence Place AND the train station. :beer:

11. lol--UPDATE

i'm amused to still see this one around...in the span of a year, i went from P.G. County, MD to Providence BACK to my hometown of Virginia Beach (in fact, i've been back in VA for over a year now)

I did want to thank the people that chipped in with advice, and I wanted to say I loved EVERY minute I lived in RI (well, some of those winter storms were harsh, but you know...) I do miss Providence, and would love to have a chance to move back if i could find a job there....

as an ex pat, RI will always be my home. RI is small but we are truly unique. Good luck to you.
