Laura Bush seems to be the teflon in this whole equation, and the fact that they need to pull her onto so many things lately to save their tenuous hold on public opinion means she herself is now putting her political capital at risk. Once she's below 50%, then we'll know the Bush administration is finished (or at least will be the most dangerous ever as a cornered animal...)
U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee didn’t try to hide his gratitude.
It didn’t matter that First Lady Laura Bush only spoke for 10 minutes at the Republican senator’s fundraiser at the Providence Biltmore hotel this evening.

Mrs. Bush's appearance also drew a couple of dozen protesters.
About a dozen were picketing in a circle on the sidewalk in front of the hotel's front entrance, while another dozen were on the street across from the hotel, before her talk.
They carried signs such as one with a picture of President Bush, labeled, "The smiling face of global destruction.”Another's sign read, "$500 a plate? I don't make $500 a week."
And they chanted slogans, including a variation on an old standby, "
Hey hey, ho ho, Laura Bush has got to go."
