Quoting:
Support for same-sex marriage is higher in Rhode Island than in any other state we’ve recently polled on the question, with 45% saying a proper definition of marriage could embrace any two adults, 51% saying the concept applies only to a man and a woman.
End Quote.
Now this, I believe. My parents, both in their 60's, support same sex marriage. Not civil unions, but full on same sex marriage. It's interesting that the state with the highest percentage of the population self-identifying as Catholic has the highest support for sam-sex marriage.
My mom is pretty liberal, but not into politics at all. My step-father is old school swamp yankee, we're talking Oakland Beach quahoggers going back 5 or more generations, but then all worked at General Dynamics and blame Clinton for the massive layoffs that hit Quonset in the 90's. He worshiped Reagan. Almost as much as he worshiped John Wayne and Elvis.
I hate to admit it, but he's a full on racist and doesn't really like or trust anyone who is not a longtime Rhode Islander and isn't white or native American. (His grandmother was 100% Narragansett.) He's functionally illiterate and doesn't think well of the so-called 'elite.' He's always worked hard, from the time he was a teenager. He fought in Korea and is staunchly pro-military. His first reaction to 9/11 was an old fashioned "go root 'em out and kill 'em all!"
He's voting dem this year though. Imagine my surprise. And if you didn't imagine my eyes bugging out and me nearly falling to the floor in shock when he shared this info, you should spice up your imagination! *grin*
And yes, we argue frequently if politics or race is brought up at all. With all that, you'd think he'd be completely opposed to same-sex marriage. But he's not. He actually supports same sex marriage. I can't figure that one out, but in his words, "it's the right thing to do. People is people."
And you would think that doesn't fit into his racist ways of thinking, but I think he's more of a racist in thought, not action. I don't really have the words for how I mean that. For example, I've never seen him treat anyone of any race religion or sexual orientation with anything but the politeness. He doesn't have any problems with any individuals, and one of his and my mother's best friend couples is black/hispanic. They go on cruises together. But, if you get in a conversation about race, he believes all the stereotypes. Even against his own personal experiences. He's not a free thinker, is probably what I mean. Anyway.
Rhode Islanders are an interesting bunch, aren't we?
