More votes for Senate than for President?
From South Dakota SoS elections website, http://www.sdsos.gov/Elections/:

Total votes for President: 388, 215
Total votes for Senate: 391,188 ..... which is 2,978 more than for President
Total votes for House: 389,468 ..... which is 1,902 more than for President

Would 2,978 people really show up at the polls just to vote for Daschle or Thune, but not cast a vote for president at the same time, on the same ballot? I don't get it.

I've sent this to Daschle's office and the SD Dem party. Full county breakdown is at http://www.geocities.com/truthnow2004/South_Dakota.htm

Any thoughts?

3. Then Why more votes in House race?
1,000 plus more votes in the House race (vs. Prez race). Stephanie won.

So it shows that the highest interest was Tom vs Thune race.

2nd highest interest was Stephanie vs Diedrich

3rd highest interest was Bush-Kerry.

It shows the high interest in the Senate race--I think it drew people out of the woodwork who either liked Thune or disliked Tom, and they didn't even want to vote for Prez.

6. precinct totals for one precinct
I just ran across the precinct totals of the precinct where I watched the count take place (on paper ballots). The totals for the races of greatest interest were:

President:
Peroutka 1
Kerry 369
Badnaric 0
Bush 130
Nadar 2

U.S. Senate
Daschle 416
Thune 97

U.S. House
Herseth 441
Begay 7
Diedrich 65

S.D. Senate
Schremp (D) 323
Bogue (R) 156 (incumbent and winner in Senate District)

S.D. House
Van Norman (D) 378 (incumbent and winner in House District)
Hunt (R) 117

I can verify these figures; I watched them being counted.

5. Difference in number of votes
While not discounting the possibility of Republican fraud, I think people may not have voted for President because they couldn't stomach either Bush or Kerry.

There is also the possibility that people didn't bother to vote for President because it was well known that South Dakota was not a swing state and the race for President would not be close here.

For whatever reason, I can state that, as a poll watcher who watched paper ballots being counted, many people simply did not vote in a number of races--including the Senate race for that matter.

7. South Dakota Election Results spreadsheet online
There is a handy spreadsheet with the South Dakota results online.

I found the high correlation of Daschle and Kerry results interesting, especially considering the spread in their results.

Correlation (counties) % Kerry : % Daschle = 0.950

The spreadsheet has many other correlations and a breakdown by voting types.
