SATURDAY, February 19
Go with a friend or two to the Governor's FLY-IN "cracker barrel" nearest you. (Schedule is below) Ask the governor, now that SB 205 has "died" in the Senate, if he will publicly support bringing it back to life. At the end of this email is a motivating article. Without the right to referendum on a local level, even if a majority of people in a locale do not want a CAFO (livestock concentration camp) in their neighborhood, they have no power to reject it. Without the right to referendum on a local level, a small group on a county board or commission can override the will of the majority they supposedly represent. Those few officials actually have more power than the governor and the legislature put together. That imbalance of power is not appropriate in a constitutional democracy. Impress upon the Governor the great importance you attach to the local right to referendum, the only legal way left to the people for controlling the location of economically, environmentally, and socially hazardous CAFOs.
