Margin narrows in U.S. House race

Democrat Stephanie Herseth holds a 9-point margin in the race to fill South Dakota's vacant U.S. House seat, according to a statewide poll. But Republican Larry Diedrich has made substantial inroads since entering the race in January.

Herseth leads Diedrich 49 percent to 40 percent in the survey, conducted for the Argus Leader and KELO-TV of Sioux Falls.

The two candidates are on the June 1 ballot to decide who will replace former U.S. Rep. Bill Janklow. The Republican resigned in January following a conviction for second-degree manslaughter.

Diedrich's campaign and the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee have spent close to $2 million on television commercials to increase the Elkton farmer's visibility in recent months.
