Aide says Johnson won't retract statement
Republican House candidate Larry Diedrich is calling on Sen. Tim Johnson to apologize for remarks he made during a Sioux Falls rally for his opponent, Stephanie Herseth.
Johnson spoke during that rally of about 450 people Sunday evening at McKennan Park. He told members of the crowd that they could look forward to Herseth, a fellow Democrat, being the next member of Congress after the June 1 special election.
"When Stephanie Herseth fills this seat, we are going to have a rising star in the House of Representatives," Johnson said in his speech. "And how sweet it's going to be on June 2 when the Taliban wing of the Republican Party finds out what's happened in South Dakota."
That brought a quick response from Diedrich. He issued a press release calling for the apology.
