ERWIN – State Rep. David Hawk found himself in the middle of a political firestorm over the weekend for writing a letter last week that encouraged the replacement of the Unicoi County elections administrator, who is a Democrat, with a Republican.

He said Sunday that the letter was written after he received a request from several county GOP officials, who alleged two examples of partisanship by Sarah Bailey. But on Monday, Hawk, R-Greeneville, apologized for one of the allegations that he disclosed on Sunday – that she had worked to get his Democratic opponent, Casey Nicholson, on the ballot in 2008 after election officials in Greene County would not do it.

He said he received bad information from Republicans and conveyed his displeasure to those officials who provided it. Nicholson said in a statement that the allegation was incorrect.

“I apologize,” Hawk said. “I was making an assumption based on misinformation.”

County Republican Party Chairwoman Kristen Allen said a lot of misinformation was floating around. She said party officials asked Hawk about the situation based on what they had heard.

“When we heard some misinformation, we asked him about it as to what was going on,” she said. “I think he was under the impression that some things had happened that didn’t. It’s unfortunate, but I am glad that it has been resolved.”

Election Commissioner Jim Buchanan, a member of the party’s Executive Committee, said he and others did not know the origins of the Nicholson story.

“I don’t know where it came from,” he said.

Allen said the party’s goal is now to move forward and focus on positive ideas.

That’s what at least one introspective legislator is asking this morning. A speech by Rep. David Hawk:
