The Tennessee Republican Party Chairwoman who presided over historic GOP electoral gains in the legislature and led an effort to strip the House speaker of his party credentials said today that she is stepping down.

Robin Smith told the party’s executive committee during a morning conference call that she would resign at the end of this month.
“As I turn the helm of our great party over to new leadership, I leave with enormous pride in the accomplishments of the past two years,” Smith said in a letter to supporters.
Smith, of the Chattanooga suburb of Hixson, has previously said she is considering a run for the congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Chattanooga. Wamp isn’t seeking re-election so he can run for governor.
