Tennessee’s Weatherization Assistance Program is about to get an infusion of $99 million in federal money — a tenfold increase over the $8 million budget it currently has to help repair, insulate and improve low-income homes to make them more energy efficient.
The state and the 18 nonprofit agencies that administer the weatherization program say the coming windfall is more than enough to weatherize every home on the current waiting list, with enough left over to expand the program to thousands more Tennesseans in the coming year. The hope is that the funds will not only help the poorest residents save on their utility bills, but will provide jobs for the local contractors who carry out the work.
