NASHVILLE — The House has voted to hike taxes on businesses to shore up Tennessee’s unemployment trust fund.
The bill sponsored by Democratic Rep. Charles Curtiss of Sparta passed on a 76-19 vote. It would increase the amount of an employee’s wages subject to the unemployment tax from $7,000 to $9,000 and raise the tax rate by 0.6 percentage point.
Curtiss says the average employer would experience an annual $108 tax increase per employee.
