WASHINGTON - Just two weeks after he survived a bruising re-election battle, U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler is taking on an even more formidable opponent: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Shuler, a conservative Democrat from Waynesville, N.C., will ask House Democrats today to choose him as their leader for the next two years instead of Pelosi, a California liberal who has led the caucus since 2003 but under whose guidance the party suffered historic losses in this month's mid-term elections.

It's a race even Shuler acknowledges he's almost certain to lose...

Shuler and his wife once hosted (or was scheduled to have hossted) a 2002 campaign fundraiser in their East Tennessee home for the benefit of the 2002 Tennessee Republican gubernatorial and ultra-conservative candidate Van Hilleray.

Shuler is also on record for making large campaign contributions to the election of Republican U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander.
