When it comes to the integrity of our elections, we are in much worse shape, here in Tennessee and across our nation, than we were when I first wrote this piece five years ago. And we know it far too well.

The question is whether the democratic ideal is still worth fighting for, or whether what's more important in our Volunteer State on this weekend is whether we have enough hot dogs and cold beer to last until the fireworks.

Here's hoping for some real and lasting fireworks. They cannot come here too soon.
