A few days ago, I sent an email to Gov. Perry urging him to reconsider his decision to attend a fundraiser in Plano featuring Ann Coulter. Today I received, in my mail box, a card notifying me that my email had been received.
This must be a custom print job. The paper is an elegant off-white, with a thickness comparable to the paper used in wedding invitations. It is a non-standard size, with a matching envelope. It is printed with the state seal and the words, "Office of the Governor" "Thank you for contacting the Office of the Governor. Your correspondence has been forwarded to Governor Perry's business office for handling." They paid 37 cents to mail it to me, and there must be an employee whose job it is to type the envelope address and stuff the card into the envelope.
Obviously, the only action my email to Gov. Perry might receive is to be printed out, passed around the office, and laughed at before they throw it in the trash. They must send these cards out to every person who contacts them. Wouldn't it make more sense to just have an auto-reply to the email to let people know their message was received? Your tax dollars at work.
