Rep. Terry Keel, R-Austin, who helped kill a judicial pay-raise bill near the end of the legislative session, accused Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson, R-Crazytown, of threatening him for blocking a pay raise for Jefferson and other judges.
"He said he'd see to it that I'd have opposition and Senator Rodney Ellis would have opposition" if the pay-raise legislation was blocked, Keel said.
Jefferson said he did have a conversation about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, when only about 24 hours remained in the session. "This was after I discovered that the compensation bill was being threatened, not because of the merits of the bill but because of a dispute between Representative Keel and Senators (Robert) Duncan and (Rodney) Ellis." Jefferson said he began by telling Keel it was a very important bill for the judiciary. Texas state judges haven't received a raise in six years, and, said Jefferson, "I think we're going to lose very talented judges." "Representative Keel went on at length into the detail of his dealings with Senators Duncan and Ellis," Jefferson said.
Keel had thought he had Duncan's and Ellis' support for one of his bills, something they denied. When their opposition helped defeat his bill he threatened to kill the judicial compensation bill, which was authored by Duncan, R-Lubbock . . .
