Democracyfest coverage in Austin's "newspaper"

The Democracyfest 2005, despite it's roster of headliners, was mentioned in passing along with Howard Dean's speech which rated a 20 line blurb on Pg B-2, under articles reporting the arrest of a woman accused of spitting on a state trooper's uniform and that the County Sheriff needs volunteer deputies. It was a gathering of "self-styled progressives". Is that condescending or what?

1. With the "fishwrap"

that's actually good coverage. When I used to deliver that rag, i was once told that I couldn't criticize anything the statesman did. My response was that since I was not an employee but an "independent contractor" as they were so fond of pointing out, that this independent contractor had an independent opinion.

2. I heard a rumor

that the AA Statesman used to be liberal and reported real news, before it was bought by Cox. I've only been in Austin for 14 years, though, so I couldn't attest to it ever having been a good paper.

3. At one time it was an award winning paper.

That ended when it was bought by Gannett who had it before Cox. It was a fine paper in the 70's.

4. Once was a good paper as were many large Texas papers before they were

bought out, merged or lost all their competition. Alas, it is the same across all of our country.

5. We only have one real newspaper here now

...and that's the Austin Chronicle.
