Someday maybe, but not soon. Disapproval does not mean people of this state are ready to put a Democrat in the governorship. Much of that disapproval comes from conservatives who are frustrated with Perry's feckless leadership on the school finance issue. They aren't about to vote for a Democrat, nor will they stay home on election day. Democrats have not won a statewide election in Texas since 1994, and they are badly in need of rebuilding. They have no bench from which they could run a credible gubernatorial candidate for 2006. They need to build up the county parties, run good local candidates and state legislative candidates before they can aspire to elect a governor. Also, having Bush in the White House kind of casts a pall over Democratic efforts here. Like LBJ, he is a kind of larger than life figure in Texas who towers over the political establishment of this state. Republican candidates for office in Texas regularly try to associate themselves with Bush, by putting pictures of him in their ads and direct mail. We'll have to wait until he leaves the White House.

The Republicans hold a solid majority and it will take a lot of work to break that down. It means Democrats are going to need to win suburban and rural areas which have been steadily becoming more and more Republican.

My mom (a republican) and I were talking about how much the governor has failed the state, and she said "But he has nice hair." Nonetheless, both of my parents (work in defense, voted for Bush, but not nutty republicans) wouldn't vote for Perry again.

Before we get all sappy about Carole, let's not forget that by defecting to the repug party, Strayhorn abandoned the idea that government could be for the common good and could lift all boats for a philosophy that assures that government is tilted toward the rich and corporate interests.
She decided years ago what bed to lay in and that must not be forgotten.
There are a number of reasons why a growing number of repugs don't like Perry, maybe the biggest reason is that he is not conservative and/or christian enough. Never underestimate the right-wing lunatics in this state.

And saying one nice thing about, let alone actually voting for, ANY Republican is aiding, in effect, what has become one gigantic gang of lying, hypocritical thugs that have taken over control of our state and federal government.

I know of a good Democrat that lives in Austin and ran into tough grandma at the grocery store some months ago. Got to talk with her and was 'so impressed' that she's actually going to work for her in the primary against Adios Mofo. NO, NO, NO!! We want Mofo to win the primary. Her brush with celebrity was obviously so intoxicating that it has affected her judgement.
