1. Surprise, surpise...Cuellar...

Hinojosa and Ortiz don't surprise me as much as disappoint me. But, I guess they think that NAFTA worked for the valley, so if some is good, more is better. :eyes:

2. nafta has worked for the valley...thousands (not exageratting) of

people from mexico come to the valley every weekend to shop and they spend big bucks. every weekend is like christmas at the local malls. most of these people work for american companies based in monterrey, mexico. they aren't the hard laborers but the managers who make good money. in the valley we also have a lot of managers who work in reynosa, mexico and live in the valley. so nafta has helped the border. that is the reason hinojosa and oritz voted for the bill. doggett is also a rep from the valley but he stuck with the democrats.

CAFTA, more commonly know as the Central American Free Trade Agreement, is opening the free trade agreement to include Guatamala, Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua for even cheaper labor then found in Mexico. It's reported that workers in these countries get paid as little as $2 a day.

If American corporations are shooting for even cheaper labor than they have in Mexico, then kiss goodbye those maquiladoras in Reynosa as they, their workers and their economic boost to the Valley will be moving further south to Central America.

Oh, yes! Central America. Warm climate. Rain forests, and where the labor is cheap and children holed-up in sweat shops will be slaving away for crap being sold at Walmart.

I think I tend to agree with this person's view point. Sure you have some economic impact happening in the Valley. Considering it's the poorest region in Texas, any money coming in from anywhere is welcomed. But at what cost, and for how long. Those jobs will be exported further south and this vote just sent them right along. My family is in the Valley too.

6. I have to agree with Sonia

There's a very real possibility (almost inevitable) that those jobs won't be around for a whole lot longer. As usual, people don't understand that their elected representatives just voted against their own best interests. Doggett gets kudos for his vote; he's more concerned about the people and the long term affects of CAFTA than he is about the current cash coming across the border.

And, as far as crossing the border goes, you indicate that these are white-collar management workers; don't you think that all workers at US plants in Mexico should be making a good enough wage be able to cross the border and buy from our business as well?

he will. My only worry at this point is that Ciro will decide to run & not pull out, leaving us with a 3 way race.... :grr:

I do feel for Ciro, I voted for him & I think the primary was STOLEN from him, but I believe Richard will be a better representative.

and BTW, I have a Richard Raymond for Congress bumpersticker. Haven't put it on my car yet because I have so many others.....which one to take off? decisions decisions.....
