Adios, Foley's
First Joske's and now this...

http://www.statesman.com/business/content/business/stories/07/28foleys.html

CINCINNATI — The number of Macy's stores nationwide will rise to some 730 while retail shopping names such as Foley's, Filene's, Hecht's and Kaufmann's will disappear next year under plans outlined today by Federated Department Stores Inc. for its pending takeover of May Department Stores Co.

Besides converting some 330 May stores to Macy's, Federated plans to sell off 68 stores where the two companies have duplicate locations, 27 of them currently operated as Macy's, including three stores in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. The changes announced Thursday will eliminate all May nameplates except Lord & Taylor and Marshall Field's.

Last week, developers of the Domain shopping center in North Austin said a Foley's planned for the upscale center would open as a Macy's in 2007. Foley's currently has two locations in the Austin area.

1. That happened here to The Bon Marche as well.
I still can't get used to calling that store Macy's. x(

4. However...Macy's had a nice 1-day sale while I was up there.
2 really nice shirts for less than $35.

5. They have those all the time.
We used to joke in the mall that they're having a one-day non sale. :D

Did you go to the downtown store? I like that one. :hi:

6. Yep. We were downtown.
I had dropped my suit off at the Men's Warehouse for a pressing and we had an hour to kill. First we went to Nordstrom's to dream, then we got real. :D

3. I'm still bitter about Foley's buying the Joske's name down here.
Now they're gone. Retail karma?

If they ended Marshall Field's I'd expect rioting. They're dumb, but not stupid. :D

7. Bought my first Beatles album at the downtown Joske's right by The
Alamo.
Hell, Foley's bought out Dallas's Sanger Harris stores about fifteen years ago.

8. And Sanger Harris was my superstore
Now it's Kohl's or much preferably small resale shops. Recyle! and funky.

11. Go to ReThreads at LBJ and Preston, southwest corner. Best of
the best ever. It's the only place to shop! For us girls and our guys!

14. Well, for all we know, Macy's will buy out Dillard's next!
;)

I worked at Dillard's at Hancock Mall when I was a freshman at UT. My first credit card, too. But I hated to see the historic Joske's in downtown San Antonio become a Dillard's. :(

13. I remember the store.Full name was Titches Goettingers, or something to
that effect. A real Teutonic mouthful;not sure about the last name's spelling.Classy department store. Don't know if they merged or just folded.

Here's another. How about Leonard's in Fort Worth? Whatever happened to them?

15. I Remember Tiches, Too
I remember Tiches. I thought it was a shame when they were merged into Joske's.

I'm not sure but I think that the Tiches in Tiches were Jewish.

I thought Leonard's got taken over by Dillards, but I'm probably wrong. I do know that the recently-discontinued Tandy Subway in Fort Worth was originally the Leonard's subway. It used rebuilt former Washington, DC streetcars.

16. I used to be a big Foley's fan
then I got real with my spending & now buy clothes at Ross or Goodwill. :) I just get a kick out of finding some really good clothes & paying $2-$3....there is no high like buying a 100% cashmere sweater for $1.99.......

btw, the little church next to dillards is still referred to as "st. joske's."

20. I will miss Foley's, but what is really killing me is FILENE'S
and I don't even have a chance to shop there.

I loved Filene's when I lived in Cambridge!!

The very idea of Boston without Filene's Basement!

I shall have to wear black that day.

Surely they would not do away with that venerable institution.
