BIG POW-WOW in Grapevine
Edited on Fri Jul-29-05 05:09 PM by Dover
Bush to receive the Thomas Jefferson Freedom Award from ALEC

President George W. Bush will address the members of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) during its 32nd Annual Meeting in Grapevine, Texas on Wednesday, Aug. 3.

"President George W. Bush's steadfast commitment to free-markets, and limited government is a hallmark of this organization. It is truly an honor to have the President speak at our Annual Meeting," said Georgia State Representative Earl Ehrhart, ALEC's national chairman.

The conference is being held at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine, Texas, Aug.3 to Aug. 5. The President will address the conference attendees during Wednesday's luncheon and will be awarded the Thomas Jefferson Freedom Award.

The Thomas Jefferson Freedom Award is given annually to an individual who has established an exemplary record of accomplishment in advancing the fundamental Jeffersonian principles of free markets, limited government, federalism and individual liberty. Past recipients have included the men and women of the United States Armed Forces, President Ronald Reagan, President George H. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, among others. ..cont'd

---------------------------------------------------------------

This summer more than 2,000 state legislators business leaders, and public policy experts will gather in Grapevine, Texas to participate in an “exchange of ideas” about how we can improve public policy and further our common goals of a limited government that promotes free markets and individual liberties. (cough!)

The Thomas Jefferson Freedom Award Banquet originally scheduled for Thursday, August 4th has been changed to the Thomas Jefferson Freedom Award Luncheon to take place on Wednesday, August 3rd beginning at 11:30 am. There will still be a Texas Barbecue and Country Dance held on Thursday, August 4th beginning at 7:30 pm. Dress for the TJ Award Luncheon is business. Dress for the Country Dance is 'Texas Casual'.

Don't know anything about ALEC? FIND OUT!

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) boasts “During the 1999-2000 legislative cycle, ALEC legislators introduced more than 3100 pieces of legislation based on our models, and more than 450 of these were enacted. . . . In the legislative Sessions of 2000, there were more than 2150 introductions promoting ALEC Policy.”
So why haven’t we ever heard of this group?

Because corporate America doesn’t want us to know. Close scrutiny reveals that ALEC is little more than a screen for hundreds of big corporations and trade associations to advance their legislative agendas in state capitals from coast to coast.

Mother Jones: Ghostwriting the Law

...ALEC enjoys what it calls an "impressive presence" among the leadership of state legislatures, with a membership that includes speakers, presidents, and majority and minority leaders in 22 senates and 30 houses. The group's alumni also include nine governors and more than 80 members of Congress, among them House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Majority Whip Tom DeLay. The council wasn't always so dominated by business interests. Founded in 1973 by conservative activist Paul Weyrich and a handful of state legislators, ALEC initially positioned itself as a counterweight to liberal foundations and think tanks, focusing on social issues like abortion and the Equal Rights Amendment. It wasn't until the late 1980s that ALEC shifted its emphasis to drawing up bills that benefit industry. Now the group seeks to "espouse Jeffersonian, free-market principles in the process of formulating innovative policy ideas and solutions," says ALEC spokesman Joseph Rinzel.

9. okay so
He can put it in a frame by his cheerleading trophies.

If I never step foot again in dfw it will be too soon.

"Gaylord Texan" is a new feature since I happily skipped the concrete. The mix master media might jump on this as a fluff piece.

Honestly. Does anyONE think this amounts to any kind of prestigious award?

Jefferson honorably bestows this award:

The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers. <check>

In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock. <sink like a rock>

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it. <devastation>

Thomas Jefferson
3rd president of US (1743 - 1826)

And the runner-up:

Thomas Jefferson once said, 'We should never judge a president by his age, only by his works.' And ever since he told me that, I stopped worrying. <mental damage>
Ronald Reagan
40th president of US (1911 - 2004)

10. My guess is that, as usual, it's not about Bush at all.
Probably an excuse for these gay lords to get together to discuss OUR country's policies and pen a few more.

They'll probably give Bush his award for good behavior,
and then send him to bed early so the adults can talk business.
