FYI Austin: Costco has donation bins for victims of hurricane Katrina

I read or heard somewhere earlier that the things most needed were water, diapers, peanut butter, and tuna fish. I bought a tons of those items plus pads and tampons for the ladies...something that is always neccessary but not always talked about.

BTW, regular unleaded was $2.77 at Costco which was 8 cents lower than other gas stations in the area. What "brand" of gas does Costco use, does anyone know?

As for volunteer work, I want to do something but I don't know how to begin. Ideas? What are Austin DUers doing?

Also, HEB is doing something similar to Costco--don't know the detail of how their plan works.

3. I saw food bins at both places yesterday...

I didn't see HEB's bin until I was checking out. I think they need to somehow make mention of the project at the entrance to the store, not the exit. I ended up donating some of the groceries I had just purchased because I didn't want to go through HEB again.

Our church, in conjunction with our local Red Cross (Austin), has decided to purchase gift cards for groceries, gas, and telephone. Unfortunately, they are asking for Walmart gift cards which I won't do. But gas and telephone are just as important, especially when you have no home. I'm certain someone else will take care of the Walmart cards... there are over 2,000 of us.
