Well, I forwarded a well intended peice of info from what was sent to
me
& I am sorry. (SEE RETRACTION, BELOW) What I have decided to do is
leave
the relay of info to the trained professionals.
If you go to
http://www.dallasnews.com you will see the homepage for
the
Dallas Morning News. They have a 'Katrina' aftermath button on the
tool
bar with all the info & MORE that I have been sending. Most
organizations that are spearheading efforts are sending news memos
there
& DMN has a comprehensive section of websites, drop off points
volunteer
oportunities, etc, which I ASSUME have been verified by professional
reporters.
Below is a reminder regarding help for the RED CROSS, info that I got
my
self from professionals I spoke with at that agency... also is a
forward
from a friend who has been at Residence Inn, her info is first hand.
The
memo sent last night about the refugee intake at BIGTOWN is accurate as
of last night, I was there briefly & spoke with someone from city of
Mesquite. BUT...Check the retraction at the end of this digest. Please
use the DMN website for info on how to help.

FROM ME, JILL P-
A VERY IMPORTANT REMINDER about cash donations & volunteer efforts:
TO help the Red Cross, the agency charged with managing the needs of
disaster victims. Call 214 678 4800 to donate. Call 214 670 4275 to
volunteer.
A word from my friend Dennis Persons in Washington DC who is a level 7
disaster specialist at the Red Cross.
He says events like 9-11 and 'Katrina' get a lot of press and donations
earmarked for specific victims of what the Red Cross calls "Designer
Disasters" ( The really famous ones)
Meanwhile, each day of the year, in this country & all over the world,
hundreds of thousands of people get burned out, flooded out, bombed out
&
starved out but have less press coverage and so less resourses
available
to them. The most helpful thing you can do is give the Red Cross a
donation that IS NOT EARMARKED. SO that this organization can do its
work, 24-7, 365 days a year, press coverage or not, for all various
disaster survivors who have had the rug pulled out from under them.
I spoke with a guy at the local Red Cross and he said that weeks &
months
after 'Katrina' has passed, these displaced people will still need
services and there will be very little press coverage. He asked that
volunteers leave names & numbers to be called on in the near future
when
the ground swell of press inspired volunteers has thinned out.

----------------------------------------------
IN LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY) FROM MY FRIEND MURIAH P:
The Residence Inn will close it's doors to gifting to refugees tomorrow
(
meaning today Sunday) at 5 but more donations and the largest number of
shoppers are expected.
Come if you can and assist with sorting or go the the Dallas Convention
Center and at a minimum help sort clothing there.
I saw a hundred cars under the bridge tonight where the homeless
usually
sleep. We are in tremendous need of support.
Hope you can find time to volunteer. If you are handicapped or have
limited physical strength, we need to get everyone registered a website
so that families can find each other. That is sit down job and is
crucial.
Also, just ministering to folks is not happening as much as is needed.
Come be a part, one way or the other.
CURRENT NEEDS:
Cases of water
Decent shoes, tennis shoes especially
Underwear (preferably new but used in the absence of new)
Can Openers
Gas, gift and phone cards
Feminine hygiene products
Diapers, baby wipes, formula, pedialite
Cash (will be handed to Residence Inn management and dispersed as
needed)
School supplies, backpacks - kids are enrolling in school
Inflatable mattresses
Sleeping bags (childs / adult)
Jobs, work
A gift of a listening ear
Someone to help them shop
Volunteers to come and sort donations
Brochures of Dart Rail and bus routes
Dallas City maps
BOXES, BOXES, BOXES
Please note that it is a zoo. Most donations were turned away at the
Residence Inn. Just tell them that these are specifically requested
items.
Another thing that would really help would be to create a handout that
would list numbers for various agencies, shelters, job sources.

RETRACTION...
OOPS!
Dallas County Health and Human Services officials sought Friday to
dispel
rumors circulating through e-mail and radio shows indicating that the
agency is providing food stamps and free gasoline to Hurricane Katrina
evacuees.
"We don't know where it started or how this started," said Jacqueline
Bell, a spokeswoman for the agency. "The bottom line is: It's not
true."
Ms. Bell said evacuees who reach the Dallas area should go to Reunion
Arena to register, whether or not they need immediate housing.
She said some evacuees might be eligible for food stamps. Those who
want
to inquire about food stamp eligibility in Texas may call
1-888-312-4567.
The county health department is providing services to people who are
being treated for tuberculosis and HIV. The agency also stands ready to
assist people currently receiving WIC benefits and or housing vouchers.
For additional information about these services, people may call
214-819-6001.
