Displaced New Orleans residents have been arriving in San Antonio (KellyUSA) - Freeman Coliseum and the old Levi's Plant are being prepared as shelters. It is possible our city could receive 20,000 people. Please help in any way you can - here's a list of donation locations and charity events (info from San Antonio Express News).

The San Antonio Food Bank is extending hours today for donation drop-offs at 4311 Director Drive from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Items needed are: paper goods, plates, cups diapers tissue, cleaning supplies, water (no glass containers), single serving snacks, peanut butter, heat and eat foods (chili, stew, canned pasta with sauce), MREs, baby formula, Ensure or other meal-replacement drinks.
The food bank also is accepting donations online at www.safoodbank.org. A special Paypal account has been set up.
H-E-B and the food banks are accepting donations of relief supplies. Donations can be dropped off from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Sunday at the following H-E-B supermarkets: Olmos Drive at San Pedro, 6580 FM 78 at Foster Road, 7010 S. Zarzamora at Southwest Military Drive, 9900 Wurzbach Road at Interstate 10, U.S. 281 North at Loop 1604.
The SBC Center and H-E-B will accept donations of nonperishable food and personal hygiene items during the Labor Day Rider Fest, through Sunday, from noon to 10 p.m. at the SBC Center. The H-E-B trailer will be on-site to drop off the items. The $5 admission fee to the event will be donated to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
Archbishop José Gomez is calling on all area Catholic churches to hold a special collection during Sunday Masses to aid in relief efforts. The money will be distributed through Catholic Charities. Monetary donations can also be mailed to the Archdiocese of San Antonio c/o Catholic Charities Hurricane Relief Fund, 2718 West Ave., San Antonio 78228. Label checks 'Archdiocese of San Antonio.'
Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Selma will be the site of a collection drive from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday through Sept. 9. Donations of clothing, bedding/sleeping bags, household cleaning supplies, bug spray, hand sanitizer, batteries, battery-operated AM/FM radios, flashlights, books and toys are being accepted.

New Life Christian Center has established a New Life New Orleans Relief Fund. Monetary donations are being accepted to help independent churches in Louisiana and their members. Funds can be donated at any local Broadway Bank location. For more information call the Center at (210) 675-4023.
The Jewish Family and Children's Service is collecting clothing (preferably on hangers) and nonperishable food items. Donations are being accepted until further notice at the Weinberg Campus of the Jewish Community at 12500 N.W. Military Highway. Christ Episcopal Church will donate funds collected during the open plate offering at the Sunday service to the Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund.
Antioch Baptist Church, 1001 N. Walters, will host a special Hurricane Katrina relief service at 6 p.m. Sunday. Representatives from the Red Cross, FEMA, insurance agencies and other advocacy groups will be there beginning at 5 p.m.
Dwight Middle School students, teachers and employees will collect donations Tuesday at the school at 2454 W. Southcross. For more information, call (210) 977-7300.
The San Antonio Police Officers Association and the San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association will hold a 'passing the boot' fundraiser, through Sunday, on streets all around the city. Proceeds will help buy necessary equipment for New Orleans police officers and firefighters.
The Humane Society/SPCA of Bexar County is accepting donations of dog and cat food, cat litter, crates, food bowls, leashes and collars to deliver to the disaster area next week. Donations can be dropped off at the shelter at 4804 Fredericksburg Rd. Transferred pets from the Baton Rouge Animal Control still are available for adoption at a discounted rate of $45. The Forum at Olympia Parkway Shopping Center will conduct a fundraising drive Sunday from 11 p.m. to 7 p.m. Cleaning supplies, clothing, diapers, water and other items will be accepted.
Girls & Boys Town of San Antonio, 503 Urban Loop, is accepting donations for the 50 kids from New Orleans it is caring for. The children range in age from 10-17. Some have special needs and most have not heard from their families. They need sleeping shorts for boys, pajamas for girls, flip-flops, swimsuits for a special day donated by Splashtown, hygiene products, two portable a/c units, cleaning supplies, bottled water, juice, phone cards and store gift certificates. USO Council of San Antonio and Central Texas is accepting donations in support of military families affected in the disaster area. Rivercenter Mall is collecting supplies for the Salvation Army at the security office on River Level behind Starbuck's and the Food Court. Donations of nonperishable food items, toiletries and hygiene products, baby powder, baby wipes, diapers, linens and towels and first aid items. No clothes please. The hours of drop-off are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
The San Antonio Children's Museum is collecting new and gently used books, toys, games and clean stuffed animals from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Labor Day and during its regular operating hours, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tues through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Pat O’Brien’s will donate 100 percent of its Hurricane sales, its trademark drink, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sept. 11, to the American Red Cross for survivors of Hurricane Katrina.
