I'm not even in Texas, and I'm about to have a nervous breakdown!
Just let me vent here, OK? I was a resident of Houston for 25 years, and my mom, son and sister still live there. I have been dealing with getting them evacuated since yesterday.

They drove to Texarkana. Took them 12 hours (normally 5). The hotel where I had a GUARANTEED reservation, suddenly didn't have the reservation and no rooms. Oh, did I mention my sister uses a walker and my mom just tore cartilege in her knee, so can't climb stairs? And my son brought his cat and 2 ferrets with them, so have to account for that too.

When I talked to them this morning, after the hotel room incident, my mom was saying "We should just go back home, this is too much of a hassle." What the FUCK?!? I told her under NO circumstances should she go back home until SUNDAY at the earliest. I found a hotel in Little Rock, with an elevator, and rooms available for today and tonight only. Booked them. They should be getting there in about 2 hours, so we will see. Then I will try to convince them to go on up to Branson, where my aunt and uncle and 2 cousins live.

Oh, and I've had to do all this from Florida, 2 days after I had a major car accident (truck is totalled and I'm pretty banged up, but nothing broken) AND I'm moving to Colorado on TUESDAY?!? AND I'm waiting for my HR dept. to get up off its ass and give me my exit interview, which could happen anytime between now and Monday afternoon. I'm stressed out, just a bit.

OK, end venting. *deep breaths*

1. I know of an elderly man abt. 100 miles north of Galveston

and he refuses to evacuate his house in his "gated community". He's a millionaire and figures the worst thing that could happen is that he might lose internet access for a few days at the worst. :wtf:

I'd be long gone myself if I was in the region.

All of this is making me half-crazy!

:kick:

2. But you're still keeping a cool head, which is needed right now
Sounds like in spite of all your stressors, you're handling things better than the older folks, who are in the thick of things, and are more fragile.

Good luck with the new job/new city, hope you're feeling better. I'll hold you in the Light, RadFem.

3. It sounds like you are doing a great job in terrible circumstances.
The plan to eventually get to Branson with family sounds good. You are helping them and found them another place. There are tons of people still trying to get out or who have given up on evacuating. They are OUT.

I'm sorry things are so hard.

4. You have my sympathy
My sister and her husband and my mother decided not to evacuate from a hurricane 20 years ago. I would have been a nervous wreck even if my sister had not had a 6 week old baby and a 7 year old child. Fortunately, their house suffered only minor damage and they were OK, but I still remember how scared I was for 3 days.

5. Me too, and I have been getting irritated at everyone today because of
the sense of helpleness and fear for what is going to happen in the near future (which I know will happen regardless of what I do)

8. They got to the hotel OK
They are going to see if there are any rooms for tomorrow and Saturday night in the Little Rock area (I doubt it). If not, they will go to Branson tomorrow morning.

I was really worried because my sister is mentally and physically disabled, and my mom just had an accident and is not getting around too well. My son (24) seems to be taking charge pretty well, though.

Now, to get myself packed for my move on Tuesday. Still waiting to hear from HR. Wish they would hurry up.

9. Good news RadFemFL
You did a good job keeping your wits there. And your son did his part getting everyone there safely. That has to be a bit of relief. Vent if you have to, we all need to sometimes.

Good luck on your move and take care!

Sonia

10. I have rooms reserved in Little Rock at the Holiday Inn.
Are you still looking for rooms? PM me please and I can give you the confirmation number. I don't believe we will use them.
