PDittie.....is your Beaumont family doing ok?
Did you say your in-laws were going with you to Dallas? That was before the new forecasts. Do you still have people in Beaumont?

Mary

2. PDittie
I've never met you, but you sent good wishes on my post last night.
I'll be praying that you're family is safe.

At least Jasper is furthur inland than Beaumont, but you know, my cousin made the trip to DFW (on 287) in 8 hours today. I hope that your family is safe and that even if they get to Jasper, they will continue on furthur inland.

3. Mom is evacuating to Nachitoches, LA
She has some cousins there. It'll be rough there too, but not as rough as a direct hit.

Don't know what Dad is doing; cell connections were poor yesterday afternoon.

As with WHD and Lisa0825, I returned to Houston rather than run out of gas on the side of the road.

6. Dad called yesterday
Edited on Sun Sep-25-05 08:30 AM by PDittie
He and my stepmother -- both are 76; Dad had five bypasses three months ago (can you believe that?!?) -- walked about ten miles into "downtown" Jasper, from his RV park at Henhouse Ridge near Lake Sam Rayburn, to find a land line to let us know they're OK. Said they had a rough ride, but that their biggest complaint was no A/C.

Just wasn't their time, I guess.

No word from Mom in Nacogdoches (TX, where she holed up with some friends) yet.

8. That's great about your dad & stepmom
let us know when you hear from your mom!

I wasn't sure where to reach you. I always seem to have trouble with your e-mails (didn't think of PMing). I had your cell # written on the back of an evelope on my desk and dashing here to pack the other day, I scooped up everything on my desk (and that was lots) and packed it in a plastic box and put it up in the closet, sooooo I left a message for you in the comments on your blog. It still holds.

10. She phoned about an hour ago
She wants to come home, but Orange Couty (in fact the entire region) is hammered: no water for a couple of weeks, no electricity for up to a month, 60% of the roads impassable, "rednecks with chainsaws" doing the roadclearing...

http://www.southeasttexaslive.com/site/news.asp?brd=2287

She's at the Wal-Mart in Nacogdoches buying a few provisions; then they will eat at Subway (God bless Subway; everywhere I went in Houston they seemed to be the only restaurant open, beginning Saturday at noon) and then they're going to the movies.

FYI: there are hotel rooms aplenty in Houston (for the moment).

13. Good to hear everyone's okay
My family is from Bridge City and Pt Arthur.

The only people they're letting back in right now are refinery workers. My uncle got a call yesterday that he needs to get back as soon as he can.

My other uncle wants to start cleaning up the trailer park he owns, so I think the two of them may head back. They've bought generators and other provisions from Walmart to take back with them, but I think the earliest they'll leave is tomorrow.

A police officer said that Texas Ave in Bridge City "looks like a bomb went off." Uggh. He hasn't been able to actually check houses or trailer park because there's too many downed trees to get there.

The house in Pt Arthur faired really well. No trees hit it, roof intact. We're very thankful.

Yesterday they heard the 3-4 weeks to go back. So it was nice seeing them this past weekend, and I'll get to visit more too. It's just bad that it takes a hurricane to get the family up here. :)
