Houston, Texas February 16, 2006 Statewide Efforts Pay Off
Democrats should back Radnofsky for senate Dallas Morning News Thursday, February 16, 2006 We Recommend: Editorial Board choices for 2006 elections
It's easy to recommend top Houston lawyer Barbara Ann Radnofsky in the Democratic U.S. Senate primary. For one, her opponent, Amarillo's Darryl Reece Hunter, is a gadfly whose proposals include relocating the United Nations to Iraq and inviting Mexico to become the 51st state.
But Ms. Radnofsky, 49, has a lot more than that going for her. She is a bright, accomplished and driven candidate who has distinguished herself as a top health-care lawyer, according to Corporate Counsel magazine. Unsurprisingly, she's a real heavyweight on health-care issues, which are becoming ever more important as baby boomers age. Ms. Radnofsky is also thoughtful and articulate on transit, immigration and veterans affairs – all of special importance to Texas. We disagreed with her on some key issues, particularly her stand on entitlement programs.
Yet on paper and in person, she comes across as a tough-as-nails Democrat. Ms. Radnofsky would certainly face an uphill general election battle in this conservative state against popular incumbent Kay Bailey Hutchison, but Texas Democrats should be proud to choose her as their standard-bearer.
Fort Worth Star-Telegram February 14 2006
Houston lawyer Barbara Ann Radnofsky has been laying the groundwork for her run as U.S. senator for two years -- and it shows in her well-developed positions on transportation, veterans' affairs, immigration and a host of others that she has posted on her Web site (www.radnofsky.com).
Radnofsky is a partner with the Houston law firm of Vinson & Elkins and heads the firm's alternative dispute resolution group. She has received a slew of recognitions, including "Outstanding Young Lawyer" from both the Houston and Texas young lawyers associations for 1988-89, being named a "Super Lawyer" in November 2003 by Texas Monthly and as one of the "The Best Lawyers in America for Health Care Law" in April 2004 by the Corporate Counsel. She skipped two grades in her younger years, which allowed her to enter the University of Houstion at 16. There is no question that she is smart. Whether a Democrat can still win a statewide election in Texas remains to be seen, but Radnofsky deserves a chance to try.
The Star-Telegram Editorial Board recommends Barbara Ann Radnofsky for nomination for U.S. Senate in the Democratic primary.
