Texas candidate, 95, targets GOP congressman

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Given his age, Sid Smith's campaign slogan seems obvious: "At 95, who needs term limits?"

Sid Smith, 95, is one of four Democratic hopefuls seeking nomination to Texas' 10th Congressional District.

The former newspaperman and real estate agent, who scoots around his hillside home with the help of a cane, is running for Congress in Tuesday's Democratic primary.

"I'm the oldest guy in this race," said Smith, joking that his Dec. 24 birthday makes him "one day older than Jesus."

His main goal is to boot from office Republican freshman Michael McCaul, who won the 10th District seat two years ago after the redistricting effort led by former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

11. Please don't encourage anyone...we have better candidates.
As a resident of this district I want our best candidate up against Michael "Clear Channel" McCaul. Thanks.

9. Interesting the corporate media is making a big deal of this campaign.
I'd the media WANTS this man to win, so that one of our BETTER candidates loses in the primary.

Fuck you, media! Hard!

As a resident of the 10th, I'd rather have Ted Ankrum, thanks.

13. As I said, this guy is a nutball. A joke. A distraction.
When we have people like this running we look like a bunch of f*&^ing idiots.

Again, this is not a game. This is not cute. This is serious stuff especially for the volunteers working hard for the other candidates that are sincere, such as Ted Ankrum.

Joking around like this does nothing but disrespect the volunteers.

Again, God bless him for running, but quite being a damn distraction.

BTW who the hell came up with the $5000 filing fee?

14. He did. Apparently, he's got some money of his own.
I was in the Travis County Dem. Party office on filing day and overheard a phone conversation. Apparently, EVERYONE tried to talk him out of running, but he wouldn't be dissuaded.

17. As I said, this is NOT a game.
If someone wants to be cute, join a beauty contest and put a damn bow in your hair.

If you want to get into politics, get advice from others. Find your base. Find you donors. Find grass roots support. Know what you are getting into. Learn about politics. Do your homework. And find your dedicated volunteers. Also be prepared to take hard advice, like someone suggesting you find a bow instead of running.

But dont just run for the sake of running and expect everyone to jump on your bandwagon.
