Snotty little "update" from Rep. Hensarling.

Emergency Spending Update

Dear Citizen,

On Thursday, March 23, 2006, the U.S. House of Representatives took up an emergency spending bill for the War on Terror that included $18 billion more for hurricane recovery efforts along the Gulf Coast.
While I strongly support the funding for our troops, I did not support the budget-busting add-ons that were attached that had absolutely nothing to do with fighting terrorism. Because of that, I reluctantly voted no on this legislation. Again, I strongly support our brave troops and have personally met with them in Iraq. But an emergency supplemental bill for the war must be just that, and nothing else.

With the national debt now reaching an all-time high of $8 trillion and the federal budget growing well beyond our ability to pay for it, I believe we must work together to offset any new spending by cutting lower priority spending. We can’t pay for bridges to nowhere in Alaska while were trying to win the War on Terror.

Another reason I opposed this spending bill was due to the additional funds for hurricane relief. I have family from New Orleans and I have been to the Gulf Coast to see the tremendous destruction there firsthand. I understand the challenges they face rebuilding their communities.

But with the passage of this bill, our nation has just added another $18 billion on top of the $100 billion we have already committed to hurricane victims. American taxpayers cannot afford to keep paying for more Gucci bags, $400-a-night hotel rooms and unused mobile homes in the name of hurricane recovery.

Before we ask American taxpayers for more money, we must have a plan, we must have better accountability, we must have a well-defined federal role, and we must have sufficient reforms to ensure the money is being used wisely, where it is needed most.

Sincerely,

Jeb Hensarling
MEMBER OF CONGRESS

6. Ha ha ha, he USED to be, but he's not anymore.
The only nice thing about gerrymandering is that I now have the absolutely fabulous Eddie Bernice Johnson as my representative. It's so nice to know that SOMEONE who represents me pretty much ALWAYS votes the way that I would! :D

7. cold hearted bastard!
Just like the first poster said, typical of them bringing back the myth of the welfare queens. How about we take the money back from KBR, Halliburton, Bechtel and have some accountability from the real welfare corporate queens. I'm sure we can find enough savings in those million dollar contracts to save the poor hurricane victims.

Ok DUers let's remember that we have a research forum. And it could use some cleanup help since the primaries, but we still have a few runoff races anyway.

Thank you so much sonias for the correction. As soon as I posted that, I began to wonder if I had my facts straight and was going to embarrass myself too.

17. Strong R district ...
that happens to be one of the two Congressional districts being reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court for voter disenfranchisement. While some people think we should leave these "strong R districts" alone to concentrate on winning other races, I think we should face down all of these wingnuts to put some cracks in the GOP armor. It's only a "strong R district" because we haven't properly contested it.

Sorry about the limited website, but I had been busy with Katy's race and focusing on the primaries and the coming county Conventions. Also, I have a new web interface being installed this weekend to provide more features and will ramp up my campaign.

20. Ayup
it's me. Thanks for the welcome back, but I regularly read DU and have never really left. Guess it's hard to tell with the few posts I have.

I have been working the Democratic clubs and will start working some voter registration drives. We need some real partybuilding efforts for the next few months, starting with establishing some party unity. And I don't mean unity in the mold of "free to be like me". We need to start developing an acceptance of diverse opinions which reflect the Democratic principles of fairness (i.e. equality), justice (for all) and the inherent power of the people in a democratic society.

And that is no easy task.

Turning Texas blue one voter at a time.
Gary

21. You wanna talk about party unity in the DCDP, I am so there.
We need to talk over a beer sometime. There are a lot of factions in Dallas and if we could get everyone on the same page that would be MOST EXCELLENT.
