Dear xxx:
For the past 21 years as your Congressman, it has been an incredible honor to represent you and your neighbors within the 22nd district of our great state of Texas.
When I started in public service, I was inspired by the optimism and conservative principles embodied by one of our greatest presidents, Ronald Reagan. Since coming to Congress in 1985, America has moved closer to the "shining city on a hill" that he so magnificently described.
Together, with my colleagues, we put policies in place to renew America's security, prosperity, and families. We adopted tax relief year after year, reformed welfare, banned partial-birth abortion, and started the effort to defend our homeland in the war on terror.
Here in the district, we have worked hard and accomplished dozens of major priorities, including building a robust infrastructure for our region with a booming port, medical and energy base. We've cultivated a vibrant Texas Medical Center, revitalized NASA and our human space program with a new mission and priorities, provided the Houston region with the vision and resources to achieve world class mobility and receive critical transportation corridors, and created tens of thousands of new jobs. And we've done it all on the enduring strength of our principles and our ideas.
It has been an honor and privilege to serve you, the constituents of the 22nd congressional district, in this the people's House.
Now, however, after many weeks of personal prayerful thinking and analysis, I have come to the conclusion that it is time to close this public service chapter of my life. It's time for me to begin pursuing new opportunities to engage in the important cultural and legislative battles of our day from outside the arena of the U.S. House of Representatives.
You and the other constituents of the 22nd district of Texas deserve a debate on the vital national and local issues that you care most about and that affect your life every day, and now we can be sure you'll have that debate. So today, I am letting you know of my intention to resign my seat in the House effective sometime before mid-June. Between now and the date that I leave the House, I will continue to focus on the legislative priorities of the 22nd district.
Please rest assured that after my departure this summer, there will be staff in the Washington and district offices providing the same constituent services that are available now to assist you with any help you may need with federal agencies.
I am excited about the future, which holds, as always, America's brightest day. May God continue to bless you, your family and our great state of Texas.
Sincerely,
Tom DeLay Member of Congress
