I come home from a long week's wage slavery to find a letter from the Travis Central Appraisal District. I open it to find that my house has decreased in value, but the ground on which it sits is suddenly worth $5000 more than it was last year. I need a drink. :beer:

Both my shack and the land on which it sits went up... but a bit less than the 10% cap.

7. Just opened my mail

I live in a working class neighborhood. My appraisal now has my land half the market value of the structure. Guess I'll raze the house to put up a mcmansion. Will go good with all the tract homes.

Interesting disclaimer on the notice. "The Texas Legislature does not set the amount of your local taxes. Your property tax BURDEN is decided by your locally elected officials, and all inquiries concerning your taxes should be directed to those officials." Glad to see all those republican legislatures looking out for all us working people.

8. Our land appraisal was increased by more than $50,000!

We live in a neighborhood south of Barton Skyway. Like you, our house value was decreased, but we've been saying it was overvalued ever since we bought the home (it's a 2/1 in a neighborhood of 3/2s).

It's beginning to smell like the city has plans for our neighborhood, but I haven't yet found out what those plans may be.

They've done this city wide.

Rather I think they are sensing some of the options for the "property tax" rollbacks and are front loading things, getting their raises in early. I suspect they rolled back the housing value in order to maximize the value of the land without it appearing to be "so bad".

Part of the reason I suspect has to do with some ability or difference in their ability to raise and defend the fair market valuation of houses faster than that of land.
