I'm just so sad tonight

Losing Ann Richards just reminded me how so many of the really great Texans are gone. I had the good fortune while I was in grad school to meet legends. Barbara Jordan. Jake Pickle. Ann Richards. All gone. :cry:

We came too damn close to losing Molly Ivins. Who knows how much longer we'll have Lady Bird...or Liz Carpenter. *crosses fingers that they're all here for a whole lot longer*

I just worry that we won't ever have another generation of giants. Where is the next Henry B or Ralph Yarborough?

She was the first Candidate I ever voted for. She was a great governor. And she will be missed.

That I did not get to see the Texas governed under here; I moved here in August 1995. (I left one bad governor, Pete Wilson back home in California, for another bad governor, Bush.) :cry:

2. Speaking of Molly, she's been

missing in action. I hope she's only on vacation.
I also had the highest regard for Ann Richards, and love that the media whores
keep repeating that quote 'born w/a silver foot in his mouth'!

3. I saw her at the Helen Thomas speaking event in Austin

Just a couple of months ago and she was feisty as ever. She was wearing a hat though, so I guess there was more chemo in her therapy.

Bless Ann Richards, Molly Ivins, Helen Thomas, Liz Carpenter and all the strong women everywhere working for a better world. Ann helped us find our way and we are never going back.

6. One of the times I met Ann...

in person...I told her when I grew up I wanted to have a head of hair just like hers. She laughed out loud. I was so tickled. :)

If I can be half the person she was...make even a fraction of the difference in the world...I would consider myself to have lived a good life.

5. DVO's message on the passing of his friend Ann Richards

With the passing of Ann Richards, one of Texas' noblest daughters moves on into the annals of history.

In her lifetime, Ann Richards shared with three generations of her fellow Texans her passion for social justice, her compassion for humanity, her zeal for truth, her brilliant intellect, and the warm nourishment of her friendship. She also shared with us her fierce and indomitable determination to break every glass ceiling and to encourage all our daughters and sons to pursue a world of equality and justice.

It is one of the great good fortunes of my life that I had the privilege to know her personally, as a leader, a heroine, a mentor and a friend. But we all had to know that as a mortal human she could not stay with us forever. It is a sad moment but at the same time it is a moment to be thankful for all that this remarkable woman did to make this age of humanity a better time than than it would have been without her. Ann Richards now takes her place as a woman for all the ages.
