Hope Andrade could be Perry’s secretary of state

I hear that Hope Andrade, a former member of the Texas Transportation Commission, is in Gov. Rick Perry’s sights as his choice to succeed the departed Phil Wilson as Texas secretary of state.

"It’s the worst-kept secret in town," a Republican in the know said today.

That said, I couldn’t confirm the development this morning.

Andrade didn’t immediately return a call for comment. Perry’s office had no comment.

State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, said she’d welcome Andrade if she proves Perry’s choice. "I was hoping that he would tap her for something; she just has so much credibility," Van de Putte said, adding that Andrade is "savvy about the border," a factor that could help in the international relations that go into the job.

But before anyone gets excited about what looks like to be a bi-partisan move or reaching out to the Latino community, make no mistake Andrade is a Republican.

Gov. Perry Names Hope Andrade Texas Secretary of State

AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry today named Esperanza "Hope" Andrade of San
Antonio Texas' 107th Secretary of State. As secretary, Andrade will
serve as the state's chief elections officer, the governor's liaison
on border and Mexican affairs, and Texas' chief protocol officer for
both state and international matters. The Office of the Secretary of
State also serves as the formal repository for official and business
records, publishes government rules and regulations, keeps the state
seal and attests to the governor's signature on official documents.
Andrade's appointment takes effect today.

"Hope's dedicated public service and business savvy have made her an
indispensable asset to the state of Texas," Gov. Perry said. "I look
forward to working with her to continue to make Texas the greatest and
most prosperous state in the nation."

"I am honored to work with Governor Perry and serve the state of Texas
as the 107th secretary of state. I am looking forward to my new role
in promoting the commerce of Texas and a prosperous working
relationship with our neighbor, Mexico," Andrade said. "As the chief
elections officer of Texas, I will strive to protect the integrity of
elections as part of our democratic process - a process that Texans
value and respect."

Andrade is an entrepreneur from San Antonio. In 2003, she was
appointed to the Texas Transportation Commission, which oversees the
activities of the Texas Department of Transportation. She also served
as interim chair of the commission from Jan. to April of 2008.

Andrade attended Our Lady of the Lake University, the University of
the Incarnate Word and the University of Texas at San Antonio
Entrepreneurship Program. She received the San Antonio Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce's Lifetime Achievement Award, the Hope for
Children Esperanza Award, San Antonio Leadership Hall of Fame Award,
and the Republican National Committee's Spirit of Entrepreneurship
Award. She was also named Woman of the Year by the Houston Chapter of
the Women's Transportation Seminar, Mother of the Year by Avance and
Small Business Advocate of the Year by the Small Business Administration.

Andrade lives in San Antonio with her husband of 40 years, Ramiro. She
has a son, Michael, daughter-in-law, Leticia, and two grandchildren,
Diego and Ramiro.

Lets hope they're not putting in a Latina in office to force voter ID on us. Color me suspicious when I see someone use the code words "integrity of elections".

2. I see more tolls and Tx. corridor development in our future...

with the big contracts going to cronies and foreign companies. And of course there is the voting 'integrity' issue too. So let's see, is this the 6th Sec of State since Perry's been in office? I wonder what lucrative job she'll inherit upon her exit of this position once she's stepped through Perry's revolving door?
