Runoff for District 17 set for December

11/17/2008 7:20 PM
By Marilyn Tennissen

AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry today announced a special runoff election to fill the vacancy in Texas Senate District 17 will be held Tuesday, Dec. 16. District 17 includes portions of Harris, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, and Jefferson counties.

A special election to fill the seat left vacant by the resignation of Sen. Kyle Janek was held during the Nov. 4 general election. In the runoff, Democrat Chris Bell will face Republican Joan Huffman.

On Nov. 4, Bell received more votes than Huffman, but did not reach the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff election.

Early voting for the runoff will be held from Monday, Dec. 8 through Friday, Dec. 12.

The winner of this special election will serve out the remainder of Janek's term, which expires in January 2011.<snip>

1. Good luck to Chris Bell
If you have any extra cash or time you can help Chris win!

Dear Friend,

Now is the time! The date has been set. On Dec.16, Chris Bell will face Joan Huffman in a runoff election for the Texas Senate in District 17. We have 28 days to put Chris over the top, but it will take even more of your hard work. Your continuous support has brought us this far, and now we are almost there!

If you haven't already, now is the time to get involved and volunteer. There are now five Chris Bell headquarters across the district, so click here to find a field office near you.

Want to help Chris but don't live near the district? Contact Lindsay at 713.667.8990 for information on our virtual phone bank program.

This has been a wonderful year for Texas Democrats, but we're not done yet. With skyrocketing utility bills, staggering college tuition costs and underfunded public schools, it is more important than ever that we send Chris Bell to Austin.

You have made the difference in this campaign from the start so help us finish the job! Please sign up to volunteer or click here to donate today.
