Jack Homer Hittson, DDS, passed away a few days ago in Rockwall County, TX. He was Rep. Kent's father - and a good friend of mine.
We knew each other through the North Texas Skeptics club, which I used to serve as President until 2005. Jack and his wife Elizabeth always made the trip to Dallas every month to meet with like-minded skeptics and hear lectures on faith healing, UFO sightings, medical quackery, psychic and paranormal phenomena, etc. I used to give some of the lectures, and Jack always seemed to enjoy them, sharing whatever insights I offered with anyone back in town who would listen.
Ginny and I lost touch with the Hittsons to a certain extent when I became a precinct chair, but we've always kept them in our hearts. Then I received the news from Elizabeth during a phone call on the 12th. We are truly saddened by Jack's passing.
In truth, I did not learn until yesterday that Jack was the father of Carol Kent, the newly-elected Democratic representative of Texas House District 102. The Hittsons often spoke of all of their children with great pride, but I never made the connection until I received the memorial program in the mail yesterday. The House adjourned early on the 11th in honor of Jack's memory.
Elizabeth has asked me to recite a poem in Jack's honor at the service this weekend. I am humbled and honored to do so.
Please keep the entire Hittson clan in your thoughts and prayers. Our state has truly lost a great man.
