Really I think it was originally used by ships that needed assistance.

Years ago, during the reign of the first Bush (41) I was working in retail and a guy walked in - I noticed two of his pins. One said "Fuck The New World Order" the other was the American Flag & he wore it upside down. So I asked, "Isn't the flag upside down a sign of distress?" He kind of got this wolfish grin and said "yeah."

During some "militia" stand off during the Clinton administration, didn't the guy have the American flag upside down?

We are distressed with the direction of our country. Our liberties are under attack. We need assistance.

I'm a former soldier (1st CAV) 13F. I could never bring myself to do this in protest...even if I did think my CINC was a POS.

The flag has a special place in my heart.

I've carried some of my friends underneath it.
