AUSTIN — Prosecutors agreed Wednesday to drop illegal campaign contribution charges against Cracker Barrel Old Country Store Inc., one of eight companies initially indicted in an investigation into a Texas political action committee.
Cracker Barrel is the third company to have charges dismissed in the case. Sears, Roebuck and Co. and Diversified Collections Services Inc. reached similar agreements with prosecutors.
The companies and three people were indicted in September in connection with contributions to Texans for a Republican Majority, formed by U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay during the 2002 state legislative campaigns.
The use of corporate money for political purposes is illegal in Texas.
Cracker Barrel was accused of making a prohibited corporate contribution of $25,000.
As in the previous two agreements with indicted companies, the one entered Wednesday with Cracker Barrel calls for the company to cooperate in the ongoing investigation, said Travis County assistant district attorney Gregg Cox.
