I hope you can attend the following event:
An Ethics Charge Against A Republican Leader In The United States House of Representatives.
A Concentrated Plan to Spin the Media
And Divert Attention from the Charges.
Sounds familiar, doesn't it? Sounds like a news report about Tom Delay.
But it isn't.
It's a story about then-Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and his efforts to spin his way out of serious ethics charges, because Congressman Jim McDermott (D-Washington) heard a tape of a phone call in which Speaker Gingrich explained his strategy to other Republican leaders.
Congressman Jim McDermott shared that tape with the news media and
the Gingrich spin machine was finally stopped!
But ever since Jim's courageous act , he has become a Republican target .
A Republican Congressman Filed a civil suit against Jim - the first time in history that one Congressman sued another.
The Case has gone all the way to the Supreme Court and may end up there again. At the same time, in a move orchestrated by Tom Delay, an ethics charge has been filed against Jim McDermott in the House.
As a matter of pure partisan politics , this case is frightening .
As a matter of law , this case could have a chilling effect on reporters and reduce the possibility of exposing official misconduct.
As a matter of personal behavior, t his case demonstrates the cost of doing the right thing . Jim's legal fees are escalating and he faces the possible fines exceeding $500,000 if the Republicans prevail in court.
WE CAN'T LET THAT HAPPEN.
Please join us for a reception for Congressman McDermott on Sunday May 15, 2005 from 4:00-6:00 pm at the home of Gerlyn Dreyfous (2233 Fardown Ave. Holladay, UT) Tel 273-0270.
Suggested donation $100. RSVP: McDermott_Event@Hotmail.com
Congressman McDermott (who you may remember from the opening scene of Michael Moore's film "Fahrenheit 911) will speak at this event about the case, about the Republican effort to destroy the Ethics process in Congress, and the challenges facing Democrats.
