The Pentagon may be destroying records that could help shed light on the effects of fallout from nuclear bomb tests in Nevada and around the world.
A bill introduced this week by U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, would put a stop to it.
The records in question might contain information that could help Utah victims of fallout -- known as Downwinders -- to establish eligibility
under a proposed expanded compensation program, Matheson spokeswoman Alyson Heyrend said.
The proposed expansion of the Radiation Exposure and Compensation Act would base eligibility on scientific evaluation of possible doses instead of geographic boundaries. The trouble is that the records with data to support the science are spotty. <snip>
