Walker is ahead: But 40% of voters undecided, Tribune poll shows

By Dan Harrie
@2004, The Salt Lake Tribune

There is no telling which governor candidates will emerge Saturday from the Republican State Convention, but Gov. Olene Walker is the favorite of the voting public, according to a new Salt Lake Tribune poll.

If the election were held today, about 28 percent of voters would choose the Republican incumbent; Jon Huntsman Jr. is second, with 13.1 percent.

Democratic candidate Scott Matheson Jr. was favored by slightly more than 7 percent, which put him less than 1 percentage point behind Republican Fred Lampropoulos.

1. I don't think Republicans will nominate Walker.
I have a feeling they'll nominate some far right Republican. WHICH plays well for Matheson. Utahsn don't like ANY extreme (liberal or conservative). In fact most of our governers tend to be moderates. Even the Republicans.

Now it's gonna be a much harder fight for them. I still think Republicans will win in 2004, but now it's not a sure thing. Nominating Walker would have made it a sure thing. Why? Because she would have stolen a lot of Democratic votes from Matheson.

But now it'll probably be against two Utah 'sons'. Scott Matheson and John Huntsman Jr.

Both are very moderate. Both are very rich. Both are very loved here within Utah.

One good thing Matheson has going for him is that his brother is running for re-election to congress. Two last names on the ballot should help.
