Only in Vermont. Recruiter gave us doughnuts.
Yesterday`s protest outside the Army Recruiter`s in Barre, Vermont had a really bright spot, a welcomed offset to the "F--K alla yooze" pickup guys.

We wrapped around the sidewalk outside the recruiter`s office when two....and then two more young recruiter kids marched past with nary a glance our way. Camouflage pants, boots, black tee shirts. One shirt had a catchy ode to pain written on the back. Gave me a shudder. I couldn`t help but notice how young these kids were.

On their return from Dunkin` Donuts, one recruiter piled up three bags of doughnuts and a box of coffee for the protesters..."There ya go, folks"....then made his way to their parking lot where the four of them stood arms folded, legs spread, smiling.

It made me think. These were just kids from a blue-collar town, trying to move on up and out. I hoped with all my heart that none of them would end up in Iraq.

4. Will these kids treat killing Iraqis like a video game?
Story last week (saw it on DU but don't have a link) about the number of AWOLS and other military refusing to return to Iraq. Some left for Canada. One sergeant (10 years in the service) refusing to go back described the brutal behavior of some new, young recruits, saying they treated killing people like they were playing a computer game.

As far as any recruiter goes, I don't agree that they are just "kids from a blue-collar town, trying to move on up and out." Because the "career" they've chosen involves lying to and bribing gullible young men and women to meet the recuiters' assigned goals, even though the recruiters know damn well that very many of these young healthy people they are recuiting will end up dead, or terribly wounded and maimed for life. If anyone SHOULD end up in Iraq, next to the politicians who support this war, it is these recruiters.
