Boston GlobeBurlington College to send students to Cuba
July 25, 2007
BURLINGTON, Vt. --Burlington College is starting a program that will send 15 students to Cuba for a semester to study at the University of Havana.
The full-time program will include courses in Cuban studies, history and culture, Spanish language instruction and another course.
The college received a license from the U.S. Treasury Department for the program. The United States has had a trade embargo with the island nation since shortly after the Cuban revolution of 1959.
"Now, more than ever, we need to open up the lines of communication with Cuba, and people-to-people exchanges are often the best paths to peace and stability," said Burlington College President Jane O'Meara Sanders. "As an independent, progressive college that emphasizes the dynamic relationship between education and experience, we encourage students to become actively engaged in fostering a just, humane society and sustainable communities."
