AP is calling Reichert winner

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Republican Rep. Dave Reichert survived a strong challenge from Democratic newcomer Darcy Burner, winning a second term Monday amid a Democratic wave that swept his party out of power in the House.

Reichert retained his seat after new returns were posted Monday night from King County. His lead stood at 4,727 votes, or 51.1 percent to Burner's 48.9 percent. Overall, 208,225 votes had been counted in the race.

Burner had led Reichert in earlier King County returns, although an Associated Press analysis showed her margin there was likely not enough to overcome his lead in the Pierce County portion of the district, which sprawls across the suburbs east and southeast of Seattle.

In Monday's count, Reichert pulled slightly ahead of Burner in King County, putting the race out of reach. The vast majority of the voters in the district cast their ballots by mail.

Don't get your panties in a wad over this....AP was "calling it" for Dave by the morning after. Their "projections" consist of saying "if the the outstanding votes in each precinct break the same way the already counted ones are, this is what the result will be." Much like saying "because it didn't rain the last two Tuesdays, it probably won't rain this coming Tuesday." It may not, but it has nothing to do with whether it did or didn't before

2. One of those uncounted votes for Darcy may be mine.

My Voter ID hasn't shown up yet in the list of received ballots on the KingCo website. I dropped off my absentee ballot at a polling place on Election Day.

I'm going to try to go to the Canvass Board meeting tomorrow, but I've got to juggle some things.

U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert campaigned on his willingness to buck his Republican party.

On Monday, he eluded his party's nationwide losing streak by apparently beat back a fierce, expensive challenge from Democrat Darcy Burner.

"I am a little surprised it was as tough as it was, because of the inexperience of my opponent," Reichert said. "The national environment played significantly higher role, and had more of an impact, than I expected it to play."

At least 20,000 ballots remain uncounted, but Reichert has steadily padded his lead since election day, and held a 4,727-vote margin on Monday. The Associated Press, based on voting trends, declared victory for Reichert late today.
